Innovation & Protection DIN EN 659:2008 (EN 659+A1+AC:2009) for indoor fire-fighting Under no circumstances must simple standard gloves made of leather be worn for indoor fire-fighting. During a fire the fire brigade personnel is exposed to more extreme thermal condi-tions. During indoor fire-fighting there is always a danger of the formation of dart- ing flames or flashovers. New requirements have been included in the EN 659:2008 (EN 659+A1+AC:2009) norm: for example the shrinking of the leather and strength of the seams. Also of interest is the new point concerning the penetration of chemicals. Here the glove has to protect against the following chemicals: 30 percent sulphuric acid 40 percent sodium hydroxide 36 percent hydrochloric acid O-xylene All models from our FIRE KEEPER®, PATRON® fire, PATRON® Pbi, PATRON® Fire Elk, FIRE KEEPER® Pbi, Patriot® and Fire Action brands have been tested and certified according to the latest EN 659 directive. This norm always includes EN 388, EN 407 and E DIN EN 659:2008 (EN 659+A1+AC:2009) EN 407 Protection against Heat and/or Fire 0 – 4 burning behaviour 0 – 4 contact heat 0 – 4 radiant heat 0 – 4 small splashes of molten metal 0 – 4 large quantities of liquid metal EN 388 Protection against Mechanical Risks 0 – 4 abrasion resistance 0 – 5 cut resistance 0 – 4 tear resistant 0 – 4 puncture resistant EN 420/EN 21420 General requirements for protective gloves Production & Quality assurance Whether it be grey goods, such as leather or Kevlar for special and standardised gloves, or face and lining fabrics for certified protective cut-resistant clothing, we draw on suppliers with whom we have been collaborating for many years, both at home and abroad. In this way, a continuously high quality of standard is assured at all times. At all production sites in Europe and Asia where askö products are manufactured and pro- cessed, appropriate facilities are availa-ble in the form of special machinery and specialist workers with a high level of expertise and flexibility. For all stages of manufacturing, starting from raw materials through to end products, whether manufactured in Germany in Europe or Asia, quality controls are required and carried out in the factories on an ongoing basis. We visit the production sites at regular intervals and all staff and those in charge of quality management are continually trained with a view to the latest requirements. Working conditions under the aspect of “fairness” are regularly discussed also to ensure continuity of quality. Good exchange of information between members of AGKI (Association of Import-ers of Personal Protective Equipment) represents another assur-ance criterion in the area of quality management. Furthermore, there is regular monitoring by certification bodies. or our gloves we use selected high-performance inserts (membranes) from famous brands such as Porelle and Hipora. All climate membranes have the same basic function: they protect the body against moisture from outside and transport the perspiration from the inside to the outside using a tempera-ture gradient. This provides our gloves with excellent comfort properties. All membranes consist of polyurethane or polyester. Due to our special processing guidelines the membranes are excep- tionally hard-wearing, stretchable and extremely tear-proof. In or-der to provide a waterproof structure each individual seam is fused with a special heat-sealing band so that no water can penetrate the seals from the outside. 6

Why test? The membrane in emergency gloves not only protects against moisture penetration, but also provides an important barrier against blood, bacteria, smoke, and other potentially hazardous substances. If it is damaged or permeable, this can lead to a serious safety risk. Regular inspection contributes to your own he-alth and operational readiness. How the test works: To perform the test, open the glove wide and place a dry paper towel deep inside the glove, ideally all the way to the fingertips. This towel will later serve as an indicator of whether water has penetrated the glove. Next, fill a container with warm water (approx. 40 °C). The glove is then completely immersed in the water up to the cuff and left there for about three to five minutes. To simulate the stress of use, the glove can be gently squeezed during this time. After the water bath, the glove is removed, shaken out, and opened. The towel inside is then checked: if it is dry, the membrane is intact. If it is wet, the glove is defec- tive.
